Marry Cassatt Pearls | Woman In A Loge
04-30-2013, 11:59 AM

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, in their Current Exhibitions, Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity running only Through May 27, 2013 has the good fortune of having the painting Woman In A Loge shown below. As you can see she is wearing a classic pearl necklace. It is a stunning painting and we highly recommend the Pearl-Education.com community to visit the exhibit if you have the chance.

Yes, this painting is quite stunning, and totally captures the casual elegance and attitude of how wearing pearls and being dressed up makes women feel and look. I love the peaceful feeling you get when you stare at the woman for a minute. She is happy and calm, and the blurred people in the background attest to the fact that - in the moment depicted in the painting - she is happy with herself and does not need anyone's attention to validate her happiness or self-confidence.

In Mary Cassatt's In the Loge, from 1878, she shows us the power of the female gaze -- a rare subject prior to this time. Not only is the woman an active spectator, looking through her opera glasses, but she is also the object of the gaze of the man in the distance." Deborah A. Goldberg, Ph.D.
