Selling Natural Pearl Necklace

Thanks for your post to

We get this question very often. Please see below:

A pearl such as this is rare and you should follow these steps:

(1) Have the pearl certified by the Gemological Institute of American through a CPC Report (Cultured Pearl Classification Report) so you can prove it is a natural pearl versus a cultured pearl

(2) Contact the auction houses. Sothebys, Christies and Phillips are among the popular ones

(3) Meet with a representative from the auction house and try to sell your pearl at auction is a good way to get a higher value

(4) Shop your newly certified pearl among Antique or Estate Jewelry Dealers as they often are looking to buy natural pearls. There is a jewelry industry directory called The Jewelers Board of Trade Confidential Reference Book that lists every wholesale jeweler in the United States by state and then broken down by town. This would be a very good way to find an Antique or Estate Jeweler. The JCK (Jewelers Circular Keystone) may also have a directory that is searchable by category instead of trying to find a buyer geographically.

(5) Take a photograph, weigh and measure your new pearl so you have it for your records.
